The vacuum or siphon coffee brewing method is part art and part science, combined with gravity-defying magic! Heated water rises, travelling from one glass chamber to another, and meets freshly ground beans. In minutes, aromatic, satisfying coffee flows into the lower chamber, ready for you to enjoy. Who said ‘slow’ coffee couldn’t be quick and easy?
The Bodum PEBO Vacuum Coffee Maker has captivated coffee lovers for decades. With our recent innovation, the ePEBO Electric Vacuum Coffee Maker, we’ve brought a time-honoured brewing method up to date. Now you can have perfectly brewed vacuum coffee at the touch of a button.
The ePEBO lends a theatrical air to coffee-making but is almost as easy to use as an electric kettle. (As with other electrical appliances, it should never be immersed in water. It’s important to clean the jug with just a soft, damp cloth and avoid using abrasive cloths/chemicals anywhere.) With its striking appearance and impressive performance, the ePEBO makes a wonderful talking point while being convenient for everyday use.
Thanks to the heat-resistant borosilicate glass jug and funnel, the whole brewing process is visible. The vacuum created helps to ‘lock in’ the beans’ flavour, while the integrated filter maximises taste and minimises waste. No paper filters or capsules are required; no spent grounds escape.
Water
Grind freshly roasted coffee beans until they develop a medium-fine texture, similar to table salt. Place your Bodum ePEBO Vacuum Coffee Maker on a heatproof, non-slip surface. Remove the funnel and set it aside for now (its lid, when upturned, makes a convenient stand). Pour enough fresh water into the jug to make six to eight cups of coffee (the jug’s handy measuring guide will help you). We recommend using 125 ml/4 oz. per cup, up to a maximum of 1 L/34 oz. for eight cups. Place the jug on the base.
Top tip: our Bistro Electric Burr Coffee Grinder makes light work of producing the perfect grind. By crushing rather than slicing, it better preserves the beans’ flavour.
Coffee
Pick up the funnel then pull the filter chain down and hook it onto the end of the tube. Place the funnel on top of the jug so that the tube is immersed in the water. Check that the area where jug and funnel meet is sealed. Press the power button – the light and sound let you know that the coffee maker is now switched on. Put the lid on top of the funnel.
Brew
As the water is heated, vapour is created. The pressure in the jug increases, pushing the water up into the funnel. Once the vast majority of the water has reached the funnel, remove the lid and add the ground coffee. We recommend using one level Bodum scoop or tablespoon per cup. Gently stir with the non-scratch PEBO spoon included with the coffee maker to ensure the ground beans are fully saturated. Return the lid to the funnel.
Enjoy!
The ePEBO lets the coffee brew for the optimum time: four minutes. It then turns itself off automatically. As the pressure decreases, the brewed coffee is pulled down into the jug with a vacuum action. The filter ensures that the grounds remain in the funnel.
Remove the funnel and pull the filter chain down to unhook it from the tube. Flip the small lid over the top of the jug. Lift the jug off the base then serve and enjoy your vacuum coffee. If you’d like to ensure the jug’s contents remain warm for 30 minutes, the ePEBO’s ‘keep warm’ button is all you need.
Top tip: our double wall Canteen glasses are ideal for vacuum coffee. They’re specially designed to keep hot drinks at the perfect temperature for longer while being cool to the touch. Alternatively, to savour vacuum coffee on the move, try our brilliantly effective travel mugs.
