How to Make Better Coffee at Home

Enjoying a delicious cup of coffee in the comfort of your own home is surely one of life’s simplest pleasures. However, people often don’t treat coffee with the respect it deserves, relying on instant, capsule or pre-ground coffees that just don’t hit the spot. Luckily, with the Bodum® range of premium coffee products, there is no need to skimp on great taste or style, so long as you get the basics right.

Here’s our guide to making better coffee at home.

01

Find the Right, Fresh Coffee and Store it Properly

The best cup of coffee will start with the best fresh coffee beans. Starting from beans rather than ground coffee will mean your coffee has a fuller flavour and aroma. Choose from the delicious range of Bodum® coffee beans to start your new caffeinated adventure.

But great beans need protection. Coffee becomes stale when exposed to oxygen and will quickly lose its great taste and aroma when left uncovered, so make sure you store yours carefully. We recommend using airtight containers as optimal storage for your fresh coffee, like our Bodum® Classic Storage Jar.

Use a Burr Grinder

A really good conical burr grinder, like our Bistro Conical Burr Grinder, is by far the best investment when looking to up your coffee game at home. Burr grinders crush rather than slice the beans, which offers a better consistency and adjustability of grind.

Pour water the right way

Water is the ‘secret ingredient’ on which you really can’t compromise. Hot water is a super solvent, which extracts the flavour and oils from coffee beans. A great cup of coffee is 99% water, so make sure you use fresh, cold, filtered water prior to boiling.

Ditch the Capsules

Given the process we recommend for home-brewed coffee, this tip may come as no surprise. Not only are capsules damaging the environment, but they don’t offer the right components for a great cup of coffee. They disregard the optimum temperature for brewing coffee (92-94 degrees Celsius or 198-202 degrees Fahrenheit), often brewing instead at a measly 89 degrees Celsius or 192 degrees Fahrenheit, ensuring a sub-par cup of coffee.
