These Delightful Coffee Desserts Are Perfect for Summertime Dining

If you’re looking for simple yet sophisticated dessert ideas for an al fresco lunch or dinner this summer, you need look no further than these two tempting recipes combining coffee and ice cream. For an unforgettable conclusion to your meal, serve our coffee, chocolate & peppermint swirls or coffee & banana sundaes while you soak up some rays or watch the sunset. Each satisfying treat offers a fresh twist on the classic Italian affogato recipe.

An iced coffee dessert is a particularly enjoyable way to drink slow coffee during hot weather. Using crushed ice rather than ice cubes makes your coffee creations look even more chic, while the award-winning Bodum® double wall glasses keep beverages and desserts at their perfect temperature for longer than ordinary drinkware. Our innovative design also prevents slippery condensation from appearing on the glasses’ exterior.

When following the first recipe, you can use either peppermint syrup or liqueur, depending on whether you’d like a non-alcoholic or alcoholic dessert. As peppermint is aromatic and reinvigorating, it’ll complement your freshly brewed coffee beautifully. Why not try making your own peppermint syrup too, using freshly picked leaves? It’s wonderfully simple.

The second recipe is no less delicious and just as straightforward. This time it’s cinnamon, the glorious, golden spice, providing an irresistible aroma in addition to the coffee. Blending your cup of joe with ice cream and banana creates an incredibly smooth, creamy dessert.

When making these recipes, we favour vanilla ice cream, as it allows the coffee and other key flavours to shine. But feel free to use your favourite flavour for a tailor-made treat!

You can also use cold brew instead of freshly brewed coffee for completely chilled desserts.

Step by Step

Recipe for Coffee, Chocolate & Peppermint Swirl

  • Pour the coffee into a small saucepan. Chop the dark chocolate into small pieces and add them to the pan. Over a low heat, melt the chocolate and stir it into the coffee.
  • Allow the liquid to cool for a few minutes then add the peppermint syrup or liqueur. Stir thoroughly, either by hand using a wooden spoon or with a handheld blender stick.
Top tip: The Bodum® Bistro Electric Blender Stick will make light work of this step, plus it’s wonderfully easy to clean.
  • Next you need to crush the ice cubes. You can do this by wrapping them tightly in a clean tea towel to create a ‘pouch’ then beating the pouch with a rolling pin. Alternatively, place the ice cubes in a blender and pulse them (our powerful Bistro Blender features a convenient pulse function) until they’re thoroughly broken up.
  • Place the crushed ice in a stylish, tall glass, such as our Pavina® Large Double Wall Glass, which has a generous 15 oz/450 ml capacity, making it ideal for serving coffee desserts. Pour over the coffee and dark chocolate liquid then add the ice cream. Decorating with the dark chocolate sprinkles or curls provides the perfect finishing touch.

Recipe for Coffee & Banana Sundae

  • Pour the coffee into a small bowl then add the ice cream.
  • Mash up the banana, add it to the coffee and ice cream, and then blend the mixture until smooth and creamy. This can be quickly and easily achieved with our Bistro Blender.
  • Crush the ice cubes using either a tea towel and rolling pin or blender (as explained in the chocolate, coffee & peppermint swirl recipe). Divide the crushed ice between two large, attractive glasses that’ll showcase your creation – the versatile Bodum® Canteen Large Double Wall Glasses are great examples.
  • Pour the coffee, ice cream and banana mixture over the ice. Finally, sprinkle the cinnamon and grated chocolate on top. Enjoy!
